No pictures for this one!

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers; umbilical hernia surgery went well yesterday. Recovery is feeling rather similar to the cesarean- just very sore. The hardest part will definitely be not lifting Ryan.

In order to protect baby, I chose not to accept the anesthesia or painkillers. The numbing shots at the site, which I did receive, enabled me to be completely coherent and have conversations with the surgeon (how lucky!) . Well, thus the following...

Things you want to hear during surgery:
"You're doing well."
"You're being brave."
"Almost done!"
and my personal favorite... "All done!"

VS.

Things you DON'T want to hear during surgery:
"Scalpel."
Snip, snip, snip.
"This will be the worst part."
"This will be the worst part." (Note this is not a type-o. So I said, "Hey you can't say that twice!" They consequently changed it to "This will be the second to worst part." Ah, sweet relief.)
"That burning I warned you about will be starting now." (excellent.)
"This will feel grinding." (I immediately announced that I can't handle that word being used in the operating room. The surgeon laughed and changed his word choice to grating. Mmm, much better. The worst part is grinding precisely nailed the pending sensation.)
"Last stitch... oh wait let's do one more." (I replied, "No thank you," yet the stitching continued on. )
"I haven't had the patient awake for this surgery in over 10 years!" -surgeon
"And I've never witnessed the patient not under general anesthesia!" -other doctors

Wow! When I heard your mom mention your surgery, I never even considered the anesth. issues. You are truly brave Beth. And I love the recap write-up. Jared and Emily just asked what I was laughing at, needless to say, I had trouble explaining.
